A Winter’s Tale at the Tail End of Winter

by Snally Gaster on March 23, 2011

Winter stinks and so does the weather right now, but the Shakespeare Factory Players are into it. Or at least they’re into The Winter’s Tale, by…uh William Shakespeare. (For some reason the Shakespeare Factory Players only do Shakespeare.)

And they’re performing it all over the place this March. In fact, if you haven’t seen it, you’ve already missed the performances in Baltimore and Baldwin’s Station here in Sykesville, but fear not.

They have shows on the 24th, 25th, and 27th, so check it out.

Spring may be upon us in some theoretical fashion, but that doesn’t mean you want to leave The Winter’s Tale behind.

You can get everything you need online, dates, tickets, the story of the play.

Twice in a Blue Moon – The Big Band Returns to Westminster

by Snally Gaster on February 18, 2011

Hey, they’re back. We wrote an article about the Blue Moon Big Band last year, and now they’re returning for the Big Band Blowout at the Carroll Arts Center.

If you don’t remember, these guys are really good, plus they were featured in “My One and Only” with Kevin Bacon and Renee Zellweger, plus they have a really cool logo, plus they’re not coming alone.

Big Band Caliente will take the stage after the Blue Mooners to put a Latin twist on the big band sound.

The concert’s Saturday, May 21 at 3 pm.

Tickets are $20 for Adults and $18 for CCAC Members, Students & Seniors.

For more information or to purchase tickets in advance go to www.CarrollCountyArtsCouncil.org or call 410/848-7272.

The Carroll Arts Center is located at 91 West Main Street in downtown Westminster.

Crossfiring the Streets of Sykesville

by Snally Gaster on February 18, 2011

You know Crossfire, right? We once wrote an article about their lead guitarist, Tyler Atwell. They’re still out there, evolving, getting better, writing original songs, and here’s an original music video, featuring lead singer, Tay Jacobe, walking the streets of Sykesville. It’s nice.

There’s also a great video about the band out on the Eldersburg Patch website. Go there and see it, or well, see it here.

They’re not actually pigs. But they definitely know comedy. Would you like to be one?

They’re the Comedy Pigs and they’ll be in Westminster this weekend. Plus they have a cool logo, and bigger plus, they seem to be looking for funny people. Not just to come laugh, but to actually become one of the pigs. Wouldn’t you love to be a funny pig?

You can audition at the Maryland Ensemble Theater on Wednesday, January 26 from 8 to 11 p.m. in Frederick.

You’ll probably want to check them out first, so how about this Friday at 8 in the Carroll Art Center, at 91 West Main Street in Westminster. The humor can get slightly piggish, though, and isn’t meant for kids. Get details and tickets here.

And look at a funny pig here.

Get Your Best Winter Scenes Ready – You Can Win Money

by Snally Gaster on December 22, 2010

As long as the pictures are taken in a Carroll County Park or or Recreation Council activity. Which this next one isn’t, but we like it anyway.

It’s the Carroll County Department of Recreation & Parks 40th Anniversary Monthly Photo Contest. Which is kind of a mouthful, but you get the idea. Take a pretty picture in a county park, win money. This month it’s Winter scenes.

Walt Michael & Friends Christmas Show – Chopsticks and All

by Snally Gaster on December 17, 2010

You’ve got to see Walter Michael and Friends at the Carroll Arts Center this weekend, even if it’s just to figure out what the heck it is he plays. Somewhere it says he’s a virtuoso on the hammered dulcimer (the hammered what?), but every time you see him, he seems to be holding another instrument.

For instance, what’s this thing? A dobro?

And how about this? Could it be the famous hammered dulcimer? Why do the hammers look like chopsticks? Is there sushi on the dulcimer?

Anyway, he does all kinds of music, old-time Southern Appalachian, Celtic, his own compositions, and this Saturday it’ll be Christmas music. You can get more here and buy tickets.

The show’s at 8 on Saturday at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster. Tickets are $19 adults, $17 arts council members, seniors and McDaniel College students.

Century Had Talent, but Liberty Idol Got Canceled

by Snally Gaster on December 11, 2010

One talent show down and one lost to the weather. Clouds? Whatever. Liberty Idol, which was supposed to run on December 11, was canceled due to “inclement weather.” The weather wasn’t actually bad at all, but it did snow on Friday. In fact, here’s a snowman to prove it, the first of the year.

For more information about the show and when it might be rescheduled, contact Tony Cimino, at 410-751-3560 or ajcimin@carrollk12.org or check back here and hopefully we’ll have an update and maybe even another snowman. (By the way, the snowman had a rough second day and as of this writing is mostly no more.)

A Christmas Carol in Westminster Today

by Snally Gaster on December 11, 2010

Well, it doesn’t star Mr. Magoo, but it still sounds cool. It’s the Maryland Ensemble Theatre doing Dickens “A Christmas Carol,” and it’s today, unless today has passed. In which case, you missed it.

Today is, or was, Saturday December 11. Shows are, or were, at 3 and 8 pm.

It’s $15, the show’s at the Carroll County Arts Center in Westminster, and if you go here you can get the rest of the scoop and even buy a ticket.

{ 0 comments }

Now just a doggone minute. Didn’t we post one this before? Well, yeah, but now it’s here, this weekend, and we didn’t want you to forget. So, this is mostly a repeat, but at least we added a new picture.

The Freedom Area Recreation Council’s Dramatic Arts Program is putting on their first theatrical production, It’s a Wonderful Life. Now it’s not actually the whole show with the bridge and the water and the snow and the angel and all the action. Instead, they’re doing it as a sort of forties live radio play based on the movie.

Dinner theater performances are Friday, Dec. 3, and Saturday, Dec. 4, at the South Carroll Senior and Community Center, 5928 Mineral Hill Road, in Eldersburg.

Dinner’s provided by Kevin’s Katering, in Sykesville, and starts at 6. Admission is $30 for 11 and older, $28 for seniors, $25 for children 10 and under.

There will also be a matinee performance, without dinner, on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 for $15 at the same location.

Tickets are available at 410-549-6296 or www.mycommunitytickets.com.

For more information information, contact Vivian Davis, Artistic Director, Young at Art/Dramatic Arts Program.

Beware! Raptors at Piney Run Park

by Snally Gaster on December 3, 2010

So, you can rendezvous with some raptors at Piney Run Park on Friday December 10th from 2 to 4 pm. They even suggest you bring a camera, but beware because the raptors have been known to eat them. Cameras, that is.

We’re pretty sure Piney Run Park doesn’t have any raptors quite as fierce as these guys from “Jurassic Park,” but you know, just to be on the safe side, be very cautious, and do not attempt to feed the raptors.

It’s $5 per person, and all ages are invited, although the raptors are known to prefer children.

If you have any questions, just call the Recreation and Parks office directly at 410-386-2103 and ask about the “Rendezvous with Raptors” program. Try to stay calm and do not scream into the phone.

It’ll be just like this, which was filmed live at Piney Run.

Does Century Have Talent? Well, They’ve Got Drew Stevyns

by Snally Gaster on December 3, 2010

And Drew Stevyns definitely has talent. But does Century High?

You can find out this Saturday, December 4th at the school auditorium, where they’ll be putting on “Century’s Got Talent,” with 16 student acts, AND Drew Stevyns, a former Sykesville resident with a load of talent, who will do an acoustic set to open the show.

Here’s Drew knocking them dead on “America’s Got Talent,” where he didn’t quite win, but gave a strong performance.

Actually, that might not be Drew. We’re checking.

Anyway, the Century Music Boosters are putting on the show. It’s $8 a seat, and refreshments will be available during intermission. Got questions, contact Melissa Adelmann at maadelm@carrollk12.org

Oh, and also performing will be Call Ahead Seating, a band made up completely of CHS alumni!

This could be them, or it could be Drew Stevyns, but whoever it is, they’re good.

We think this is actually Call Ahead Seating, although it might be Susan Boyle? Anyway have a listen.

Christmas Starts in Westminster

by Snally Gaster on November 22, 2010

Yes, folks, it’s might be warm and mighty nice outside, but believe it or not, the holidays are here, and Santa is coming to Carroll County this weekend.

In fact, he’ll be the main attraction of Saturday’s many holiday events in Westminster and will most certainly take part in the town’s Miracle on Main Street, holiday electric parade, which starts at 4:45.

Got a Quarter? Get a Miracle.

by Snally Gaster on November 22, 2010

A quarter, as in 25 cents, might have meant something in 1947, when “A Miracle on 34th Street” took place, but now it pretty much means free, as in, you can see this classic holiday film for almost free at the excellent Carroll County Arts Center this Saturday afternoon, November 27 at 3. Here’s a TV commercial for the original, which is what you’ll be seeing, not the 1994 remake. The little girl is Natalie Wood, long before she became famous.

In case, you don’t know, it’s the story of a guy who takes the job as Santa in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and insists he’s actually the real thing. Santa himself. And goes to court to prove it.

It ought be dark by the time the movie ends and just in time for Westminster’s “Miracle on Main Street” holiday electric parade, which is actually part of a series of Christmas events taking place this Saturday in Westminster.

And thanks to global warming, which is actually somewhat problematic for Santa Claus, it should be sunny and close to 50, in other words, a real nice day.
